Jesus Christ Superstar
Costume and Makeup Design by Caitlin Quinn
Directed by Ryan Fortney MFA
University of South Dakota

Production Details: The director's concept for this piece was that the first half was set in the early 1970s ad the second half was set loosely in biblical times. However, he wanted the biblical costumes to reference the 1970s costumes from the first act. The show was produced for the University of South Dakota MainStage with the support of the USD costume shop.

Costume Details: The biggest challenge with this productions was finding ways to translate early 1970s shapes, colors, and fabrics into biblical era costumes for the second act. I designed all the disciples to keep their tie-dyed tunics on for the whole show and change their pants, skirts, and accessories when transitioning to the second act. The hope was the change would be less jarring for the audience and create a more visual through line. The tie-dyed patterns and wide color palette created a lot of visual interest onstage during the large group numbers. I used the same fabric for Pontius Pilate's 1970s bathrobe for her Roman toga in Act 2.
